If attacking racism means an attack on your positive Southern identity, Zevon isn't afraid to piss on it. That shit deserves to be pissed on because it's all a justification for racism as long those people continue to conflate racism with their own southern pride. And it's well-deserved because politically that pride and denial and rejection of criticism and equating criticism of racism as criticism of 'good people' or dismissal of having base human standards as 'Californian' or foreign is the exact same shit that has perpetuated southern racism for centuries now. On those specific people he's doubling down because there's no other explanation for someone getting upset at criticism over a legacy of racism from an activist musician of all people. I'm pretty sure is good folks wouldn't get offended at the Neil Young and resort to knee-jerk southern pride as a defense. He's not saying there aren't good folks in the south. Those people do exist and it's pointed exactly at the kind of person who would get offended at Neil Young. What do you think of each song and how they relate to each other? Was 'Southern Man' warranted or was Young off base? Does 'Sweet Home Alabama' make good points or handwave away valid problems in the name of pride? All of Zevon's wretched characters listen to 'Sweet Home Alabama' because it makes them proud of living where they do, because it helps them forget how bad it actually is. It's a song designed to take the piss out of every 'hometown' song, every song that shirks off criticisms in the name of 'it's home', every song that's proud despite it all. Whereas 'Sweet Home Alabama' says that you shouldn't attack a certain way of life because it's not all bad, Play it All Night Long says you shouldn't defend it because it's not all good. And 'Play It All Night Long' is a critique of that defense. 'Sweet Home Alabama' is a defense of that critique. 'Southern Man' is a critique of the south. Those lyrics should tell you right out of the gate that the song isn't pulling any punches.

In response to another (in my opinion misguided) post on this sub about Sweet Home Alabama, I though I'd do a bit of a writeup on the song and the grander narrative it fits within, as well as opening the situation up for discussion.
